Thermally modified wood—a combination of style and durability
In addition to untreated wood, we manufacture products for indoor and outdoor use from eco-friendly and non-toxic thermally modified wood (or thermowood, as it is also called in accordance with the ThermoWood® trademark). Thermal modification or heat treatment improves wood’s resistance to decay and weather conditions, its thermal insulation capacity, as well as its dimensional stability in conditions with fluctuating moisture levels.
Thermally modified wood is darker in color than untreated wood, which gives it a fine hardwood look. It is often chosen based on this factor alone. Thermo aspen wall panels and thermo pine sauna benches are always a stylish choice, but where thermowood truly excels is in wet conditions—such as those faced by terrace boards.
We manufacture thermowood products for outdoor applications using pine, spruce and ash, and for indoor applications using aspen, alder and birch.
Karava has solid, longstanding expertise in the thermal modification of wood
The production technique we use is patented, and we supply thermally modified wood to large companies in the wood industry, among other customers.
In addition to our production technique, our high quality is based on maintaining control of the entire production chain. We purchase thermally modified timber from members of the Finnish ThermoWood association, which guarantees high quality. Our suppliers include HJT-Holz Oy and Oy SWM-Wood Ltd, among others. We manufacture our own planed wood products in Pirkkala. Our selection includes cladding and terrace boards manufactured from thermally modified wood.
Karava is authorized to use the ThermoWood® trademark
ThermoWood is a trademark registered by the Finnish ThermoWood Association. It may only be used by the members of the association, as well as partners cooperating with the association on matters such as quality control and research. The ThermoWood product classification consists of two classes with different end use applications: Thermo-S and Thermo-D.
Properties of thermally modified wood
- Improved resistance to decay
- Reduced thermal conductivity
- Resin removed
- Reduced splitting strength
- Slightly reduced bending strength
- Improved dimensional stability
- Consistent coloring throughout the wood
- Reduced equilibrium moisture content
Thermo-S, applications
The letter ’s’ in ’Thermo-S’ stands for ’stability’. Along with appearance, stability is a key property in the end use applications on the products in this treatment class.
Thermo-S Softwood
- building components
- furnishing in dry conditions
- fixtures in dry conditions
- furniture
- garden furniture
- sauna benches
- door and window components
Thermo-S Hardwood
- furnishing
- fixtures
- furniture
- flooring
- sauna structures
- garden furniture
Thermo-D, applications
The letter ‘D’ in ‘Thermo-d’ stands for ‘durability’. Along with appearance, durability is a key property in the end use applications on the products in this treatment class.
Thermo-D Softwood
- cladding
- outer doors
- shutters
- environmental constructions
